F1's Greatest Rivalries

Dynamic rivalries keep fans hooked on this high speed sport

What makes F1 so electric? Maybe it’s the fast paced, high risk aspect of being a driver, or the thrill of watching a favorite team win the World Championship. Most importantly, it’s the interplayer dynamics that keep most F1 fans hooked. Rivalries bring drama and interest to otherwise plain dynamics between drivers. Watching two rival drivers compete is thrilling; with high stakes, these conflicts are tense and unpredictable.

One of the most competitive rivalries currently is held between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen. Max Verstappen, a four time world champion winner and F1 driver for 11 years, currently drives for Red Bull and is known for his aggressive, confrontational style when competing against rivals on the track. On the other hand, Lando Norris has been an F1 driver for McLaren for around 7 years, and is considered a relatively new driver. In October 2024, at the US grand prix, both Norris and Verstappen went off the track twice in order to defend their positions. A week later, at the Mexico City Grand Prix, Verstappen again forced Norris off the track. It was at Turn 8 when Norris was swerved off-track in order to avoid collision with Verstappen; Verstappen’s reckless driving caused him two ten second penalties, causing a 6th place finish for Verstappen, while Norris finished 2nd. Lando Norris admitted afterwards “I was ready to expect something like this. This is not very clean driving . . . but I avoided it and it was a good race."

In addition to interteam rivalry, the tension between many F1 drivers can center around competition within the same team. One up and coming rivalry recently is Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, who both drive for Ferrari. The dynamic between Lewis Hamilton, a seasoned pro, and Charles Leclerc, a newer and up and coming driver, is tense. From 2018 through 2022, Hamilton consistently outperformed Leclerc in points and in podiums. However, starting in 2023 and continuing to the present day, Leclerc has scored more points than Hamilton, and as the gap between both of their points scored widens, it marks a turning point in both of their careers as Leclerc flourishes and Hamilton’s points scored falls. That being said, Lewis Hamilton has still scored over 3 times as many points as Leclerc has throughout his career, and still seems to have the veteran upper hand on average race results and finishes.

The raw ambition that goes into spending your life dedicated to a sport is displayed in the rivalries that are born out of F1. Watching two rivals compete does not feel like watching two people in a car race around tracks; rather it feels like watching human emotions battle on the playing field; seeing competitiveness and a need to outshine an opponent clash in real life. All in all, rivalries give F1 its heart and soul, and compels fans to keep watching.
