With the Australian Open in the books, tennis fans are eager to watch - will the favorites dominate the slams or will the underdogs take the coveted trophies?
The Australian open was absolutely cinematic, creating a jaw dropping start to the slam season. Carlos Alcaraz steamrolled his way into tennis history, becoming the youngest player to achieve the career grand slam. Young stars like Learner Tien and Jakub Menšik made a lot of noise making it to the Quarterfinals and Fourth round respectively. On the women’s side, four Americans made the quarterfinal but none were able to finish the job. It was Elena Rybakina upsetting the reigning Australian Open champion and top seed Aryna Sabalenka in an electric 3 set masterclass.
Roland Garros:
The clay courts reward physicality and strategic variation. Clay is known to slow down the speed of the game, therefore stopping short and aggressive rallies and rewarding grueling baseline work. It’s hard to imagine Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner not winning every slam this season. They are head and shoulders above the rest of the ATP, and the French open is no different. The favorite for the French Open has to be Carlos Alcaraz. Fresh off his win in Melbourne, his relentless effort, variability, and pedigree on clay makes him the clear favorite. Meanwhile Darkhorses such as Lorenzo Musetti and Arthur Fils pose a real threat to the top seeds. Musetti reached the semi-finals last year but health concerns are the biggest thing holding him back. With the home crowd supporting him, Fils’s explosive game can propel him to win his home slam. The women’s side seems much more open. The front-runners for the women are defending champion Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka, and Iga Swiatek. The favorite has to be Iga Swiatek, after a disappointing 2025 campaign, she will be more motivated to recapture her crown. Swiatek has historically been dominant in Roland Garros, winning four of her six slams in Paris. The darkhorses have to be Mirra Andreeva and Madison keys. Andreeva is a teenage superstar who this time next year will probably be in the favorites category. Her aggressive counter-punch style will pose a big challenge to anyone in her path. Keys has one of the fastest forehands in the tour, and her refined maturity is sure to push her far.
Wimbledon:
Now it’s time to look at Wimbledon. Grass is highly demanding as it is the fastest surface and the most physically demanding. On the men’s side, the leading contenders are Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic. All three have won the tournament before and possess intelligence and confidence to succeed at the All England Club. However, the tennis world will be eager to see if Djokovic’s historic success and experience can withstand the younger stars’ fire power. That being said, Wimbledon rewards the fearless as championships are defined by the smallest of margins. Players such as Jiri Lehecka and Hubert Hurkacz are the underdogs that can potentially make a very deep run. Lehecka has shown he can do well on grass, being a finalist at the Queen’s Club tournament last year. Lehecka has stated that Wimbledon is a special tournament for him as he won the junior boys doubles and went to the fourth round in 2023. Hurkacz’s big serve and great net game makes him a dangerous opponent for any top seed and especially on grass. The only thing holding him back is injury concerns, it’s baffling how a player of his talent has dropped outside the top 50. On the women’s side the favorites, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka are the favorites to take it all. Swiatek recently claimed her maiden Wimbledon championship with a dominant performance including a 6-0 6-0 final against Amanda Anisimova. Although Sabalenka has not won a grass title she has consistently gone deep in slams and her aggressive style suits the fastpace grass. The biggest darkhorse at the All England Club is Emma Raducanu. Raducanu is the home favorite and her improvement in form has been a great indicator that she is primed to make a deep run.
