Bronny James and his father, Lebron James on the court as the NBA’s first father son duo
The crowd roars as one the greatest basketball players ever, steps onto the court. But this time, the spotlight is on his son Lebron James Jr. or Bronny. Ever since he picked up a basketball he has carried the weight of his fathers legacy. But the big question is are the expectations fair or is he just another product of media hype.
Bronny James gained a lot of attention early on when he was playing basketball at Sierra Canyon High school , a powerhouse program in California where he averaged 13.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists. Many of the alums there have gained attention on the professional side of basketball: Scottie Pippen jr, Marvin Bagley III, even Dwayne Wade's son Zaire Wade. Constantly surrounded by cameras and highlights, Bronny was showing flashes of defensive talent and maturity on the court. Bronny was ranked as a four star recruit and 7th in the state of california–good, but not elite. In the summer 2023 Bronny’s career took a scary turn when he suffered a cardiac arrest during a USC practice. Although it slowed his progress, his recovery and return to basketball showed his toughness and love for the game of basketball. Then in 2024, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers, joining his father and making NBA history by being the first father son duo.
Even after being drafted in the second round, all eyes remain on him. Every move he makes is watched very closely from the new car that he is buying or the work he is putting in the gym. The media tries to portray Bronny as a phenomenal athlete that will carry on his fathers legacy. But when he fails to put up numbers, fans and media put a lot of pressure on him, forgetting he wasn’t a lottery pick in the NBA draft. Treating him almost like a No.1 overall pick. On the court he has shown flashes of his fathers athleticism, potential on defense, and his unselfish play and effort. Even in the G league, he impressed and had a pair of 30 point games. With the support of his father and coach JJ.Reddick, Chris Paul , and now Luka, Bronny has the resources to grow and develop into a strong role player. Reddick praises Bronny for his willingness to learn and adjust. However his weaknesses–such as shooting consistency and limited experience– remind fans he is still developing.
But what’s next for the 21 year old ? It’s unrealistic for him to turn into the next Jrue Holiday or Derrick White overnight. He’s a solid player with a lot of potential and has shown a lot of growth in this year's summer league and through his games with the Southbay Lakers, but he needs time and space to grow into his role on the Lakers. With this opportunity, Bronny has a chance to carve out his own legacy, maybe proving everyone wrong showing that growth and determination can get you far, even in a league as competitive as the NBA.
