From Greatness to Failure: Analyzing the Downfall of Kalvin Phillips

By Asher Etsy

How has Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips become the biggest flop in transfer history? Many watchers of the Premier League have asked this question, and nobody seems to have an answer. There is no logical explanation for why Phillips grew so fast yet burned out so quickly, and many long-time Leeds fans will be left wondering how their youngster who helped them gain promotion just four years ago is suddenly the laughingstock and disgrace of England and West Ham. This is the story of the rise and fall of Kalvin Phillips.

Little-known nineteen-year-old Kalvin Phillips, born and raised in Leeds would be eager to make his first appearance for Leeds United in the Championship (English second division). After playing two games and scoring once, Phillips remained on the bench as Leeds remained stagnant. A season later, Phillips still couldn’t manage to break into the starting eleven, playing only ten games of the thirty-eight possible. The next season he finally gained some traction with both a new manager and with the Leeds supporters, and he played 40 times in all competitions, getting a goal, making two assists, and receiving two trivial red cards. This season showed dramatic improvement from the lad, yet he still had a ways to go before cementing himself as part of the Leeds core team.

Phillips’s 2017-18 season was relatively unremarkable, however he began to shine in late 2018. After switching positions from a central midfielder to a deeper-lying defensive midfielder, he shone under new manager Marcelo Bielsa. He was so impressive in this season that he was considered for a call-up to the England national team. He was subsequently placed into the Championship “Team of the Season” and also received the honor of being the Yorkshire Evening Post ’s “Player of the Year”. Ultimately, Leeds lost the promotion race and failed to make it to the Premier League. During Phillips’s next season, he was impressive once again and managed to get called up for the England national team, while Leeds United gained promotion to the Premier League.

One and a half years later, Phillips decided to sign for Manchester City, one of the largest clubs in the nation. This move was the beginning of his downhill spiral. His debut as a substitute was unimpressive, and after only a month at Manchester City, he injured his shoulder which required surgery and therapy. Returning from injury just in time for the December 2022 World Cup, he traveled to Qatar to represent England, but he received no playing time at the tournament. When he returned to Manchester, his coach Pep Guardiola remarked that he was unfit to play, slowing his return to the pitch even more. When he finally returned to play in 2023, he received only two starts, coming against bottom-of-the-table Southampton, to whom they lost 2-0, and against Chelsea once Manchester City had already clinched the Premier League title. From that day in May of 2023 to January 2024, Phillips did not play in a single match, and eventually, he got sent out on loan to West Ham United on a January loan, where he truly hit rock bottom.

In just three months, he has become a national pariah. Even West Ham fans have lost faith in him, calling for him to leave the club. In the first game for his new team, he was in his own box and under pressure with the ball at his feet, so he accidently passed the ball to the opponent’s striker for an easy goal. His disastrous debut would go from bad to worse as he would offer no support for the 6-0 defeat that the West Ham ‘Hammers’ would suffer at the hands of Arsenal. He would receive a yellow card in that game, but in his next, he would receive two yellow cards, and get sent off. The fans of West Ham have had enough, yet when they expressed their feelings of displeasure towards him, he publicly flipped them off and told them to “F*** off.”

Through his poor performance and his unwillingness to work and stay fit, he was additionally removed from the England National Team in preparation for the 2024 Euros, replaced by wunderkind Kobbie Mainoo, a nineteen-year-old holding midfielder for Manchester United FC. Phillips, the once sensational Championship player, is now regarded as one of the worst signings in Premier League history.

In conclusion, from being an incredible homegrown talent to a disastrous diva with no respect for the game and its fans, the career of Kalvin Phillips has been one of the most tumultuous and inconsistent journeys of a player in history.
