Patriots Pre-Draft Guide: The Most Important Pick

By Finn Konary

“With the 3rd pick in the NFL draft, the New England Patriots select…”

The executives of the New England Patriots have the chance to revive a decorated franchise or send it back to the bottom of the division for the foreseeable future. The Patriots are in full rebuilding mode, with a record of 4-13, a new head coach in Jerod Mayo, and the 3rd overall pick in the NFL draft. There has been a lot of speculation about what they will do with their pick. Will they trade down? Who will they select? In this article, I will preview various situations and options for the franchise with the 3rd pick.

Option 1: Jayden Daniels

LSU’s Jayden Daniels was a much speculated candidate for the pick even before the head coaching job was handed from Bill Belichick to Jerod Mayo, and he was the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner. He can throw and he can run, leading college players at both passing yards per attempt and rushing yards per attempt. He would be an ideal pick for the Patriots who have just departed from their 2023 starter Mac Jones. Their playing styles are very different, as Daniels utilizes his speed and moves a lot more than Jones.

Option 2: Drake Maye

Drake Maye is another proven Quarterback who started 2 seasons for the Tar Heels and could be selected by the Patriots. Jerod Mayo had good things to say about him, which increases the likelihood of his selection by the Patriots, “He brings a lot of energy. You can tell he has that leadership ability,” and “Also the exciting part about a guy like Drake Maye, there is really no ceiling with a guy like that.” Leadership qualities are very important for someone running your offense; furthermore, the acquisition of QB Jacoby Brissett hints that the Patriots might be looking to develop a young Quarterback behind a veteran.

Option 3: Marvin Harrison Jr.

The Patriots could also elect to take a receiver instead of a passer. Marvin Harrison Jr. is the top wide receiver prospect in this draft, and for good reason. The reason Marvin Harrison stands out is due to his versatility as a route runner, as well as his size (6’4”, 209 lbs). A true WR1 is something the Patriots have been lacking since the retirement of Julian Edelman and a generational talent might be just what they need.

Option 4: Trade DownTrading down would likely mean passing on a true top-tier signal caller or a generational pass catcher. However, it is also true that the Patriots have more needs than quarterback and wide receiver. The offensive line was riddled with injuries, and its depth was therefore exposed. Trading down could land the Patriots more picks this year and in years to come, leading to more opportunities for solid college players in the first. This would help contribute to a whole team kind of rebuild that many are open to, including the Patriots' director of scouting Eliot Wolf, “We have some holes we feel like we need to fill in the draft,” Wolf said. “We're drafting to develop the team. The more picks we have the better.” Another factor in the equation is whether the Patriots like the prospects available at the 3rd pick.
