How the Importance of Basketball Sneakers has Evolved
In sports, there are only so many accessories that are as important as a pair of basketball sneakers. You could argue the cleats of a baseball player or the helmet of a football player, but throughout the years, sneakers have certainly gained importance. It began as only a shoe that provided grip and support on the court, but the shoes have become a way for players to express their personality, as well as providing athletic ability and comfort. From the court to the park, basketball sneakers as a whole have increased in significance.
The Origins of Basketball Sneakers
Introduced in 1917, the Chuck Taylor’s from Converse was one of the first deemed as a “performance shoe”
In the early 1900s, players treated basketball as a simple game, playing with gear for optimal performance, not caring what the shoe looked like. They would simply wear regular shoes with simple rubber soles. However, when the Converse Chuck Taylor’s were introduced to the world, the basketball sneaker game was changed forever. It provided elite ankle support and traction (at that time) that resonated with such a fast-paced sport. Suddenly, a staple of the sneaker game had been produced.
Endorsements
The Air Jordan 1’s, which were one of the first basketball sneakers to be named and designed by a player.
In the 1980s, a shockwave was sent through the basketball community in the way of sneakers. Companies such as Nike, Reebok, Adidas, and even Converse realized the marketing potential of having professional athletes identify themselves with one brand. Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Isiah Thomas, and other NBA stars of the 1980s were brought together to make an advertisement for Converse, skyrocketing the appeal of the brand. All of a sudden, the Converse Weapons were being worn by almost every basketball player. That was until the Jordan 1s were released in 1985. With its bold design, and influential technology, a rookie Michael Jordan had taken over the game. With these two shoes, basketball sneakers weren’t just equipment, they had suddenly become collectibles and symbols for fans of the sport.
Its Impact Today
Anthony Edwards’ AE 1s are just one of the plethora of recent basketball sneakers represented by a star player.
That leads us to the present, where basketball sneakers are more important than ever. Nike and Adidas are still running the game, but brands such as Under Armour and Puma follow close behind. Almost every top-20 player in the NBA has a sneaker brand that appeals to the audience in various ways. Commercials, social media, and billboards are all ways they promote their sneakers, and it’s come a long way from just providing comfort as well. Not only are the shoes comfortable, but provide maximal support to players, and are designed to be as fashionable as possible. Overall, the progression and evolution of basketball sneakers have grown tremendously, and with so many young stars in the NBA today, I am excited to see how it can progress in the coming years.
